Last night was the Hockeytown House party. The winner Eddie in Dearborn got a 52 inch plasma TV, and a party for 30 people at his house. We set up a tent in the back yard for the BBQ, and former Red Wing John Ogradnick came by to sign autographs and watch the game with us and Al Sabotka showed up with the Zamboni. Everything was great except the final score, with Detroit loosing in double overtime!
Tonight I’ll be at Guitar Center in Roseville for Guitarmagedon, and tomorrow I’ll see you at the Rock Girl finals in Mt. Clemons at the Emerald.
Be well,

Playoff time in the D.

Here are my Stanley Cup playoff predictions.

First round West: Detroit vs. Edmonton – Red Wings should win in 5.

Dallas vs. Colorado – Dallas has been solid all season. They are a good mix of veterans and youngsters with exceptional goaltending. Stars in 6.

Calgary vs. Anaheim – The Ducks are an up and coming team with talent, but Calgary is too good and too deep. Flames in 6.

San Jose vs. Nashville – Props to the Preds on a fine season….now go home. San Jose is a good team with good leadership. Sharks in 5.

First round East: Ottawa vs. Tampa Bay – Ottawa might be the most talented team in the league. Sens in 5.

Carolina vs. Montreal – What a season for the Hurricanes, I can think of 10 reasons why they should win this series, and only 1 reason the Habs will win, Cristobal Huet. Canadians in 7.

New Jersey vs. New York – The Rangers have been awful the last 6 games, the Devils have been on fire….pun intended. Devils in 6.

Buffalo vs. Philadelphia – The best series of the first round. I like Buffalo, but Philly’s is a scary team. I’m picking Buffalo due to the their team concept, and heart. Sabers in 7.

Second Round West: Detroit vs. San Jose – Detroit was the best team all season, watch them roll. Red Wings in 6.

Dallas vs. Calgary – I’m going out on a limb and taking Turco over Kiprusoff. It’s just a gut feeling. Stars in 7.

Second Round East: Ottawa vs. Montreal – IF Hasek is back and playing like he can….Ottawa is unstoppable, even without him the Senators are too talented. Ottawa in 7.

New Jersey vs. Buffalo – Another great series, bet on Brodeur. Devils in 7.

Finals West: Detroit vs. Dallas: Detroit is so deep, at every position, and their dept should keep them fresh. Red Wings in 6.

Finals East: IF Hasek is healthy and rolling, the best goaltender in the world on a talented team like Ottawa will go to and WIN the Stanley Cup. I’m betting Hasek won’t be 100%. Devils in 7.

Stanley Cup Finals:
Detroit vs. New Jersey – I always question my objectivity when I pick the home team, but Lidstrom, Yzerman, Shanahan, Homer and Draper will remember the last time Detroit played N.J. for the cup. Add Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Schneider, Kronwell and the list goes on and on. Red Wings in 6.

Last night was my first trip to Gilda’s Club as a member. Both Sabrina and I had done some volunteer work at Gilda’s, but now that Sabrina has passed away I attended a meeting for people who lost their spouses to cancer.

None of it is easy, but I think it helps to be around others who have had similar circumstances. So thank you to all the others at the club for helping me along.

For Sabrina’s prayer card at her memorial service, I used some of the lyrics from the Triumph song “Fight the Good Fight” written by Rik Emmett about fighting cancer.

Rik heard that Sabrina crossed over, and sent this note.

With sadness, I have learned of your wife Sabrina's passing. Although I did not know her, I recall the depth of your spirit through your interview style, and your comprehensive passion for the music. I know this must be a terrible, difficult time for you, as you are a caring and sensitive person.
I only wish to express my sincere condolences to you, and to your family and friends. I hope you can find some small measure of comfort in the fact that many hearts and souls are reaching out to you now, in a time of sorrow. I also hope that music will help you find your way back to times of joy, celebrating the gift of life, which you had the great fortune to share with someone you loved deeply.
Sincerely,
Rik Emmett

checking in

Happy Saturday everyone. Today is April, 15th (Tax Day) and it would have been Sabrina’s birthday. I’ve decided to believe that the perfect weather is a birthday gift from her to all of us!

Last night I made it over to the Magic bag to see Jeff Berlin, Stu Hamm and Billy Sheehan at the Magic Bag. For the non-musicians checking in, they are 3 of the world’s all-time greatest Bass players.

I got to the "Bag" at 7:15 and watched sound check then recorded a Chop Shop with Billy and Stu. Yes, I’m finally going to have some Bass players in the Chop Shop, in-fact I’m going to use it for my 2-year anniversary show on the week of May 8th

Wow, the Chop Shop is almost 2 years old, and we’re on 25 radio stations as of today with a few more seriously looking at adding the show. Perhaps we can have 30 stations by mid-May.

After the interview, I called my long time friend, and local Detroit guitar hero, Paul Kramer and we went over to Howe’s Bayou with Stu Hamm for a Good Friday dinner (excellent catfish) and then over to watch the show, which was brilliant.

Tonight is the Rif Rock Girl party at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. I’m sure Drew & Mike will be checking in on the radio during my "Amped on the 80s" show. Tune in OR get to the party in person……and have a great Easter.

Getting back to life

There are still a lot of ups and downs as I try to get used to life without my wife Sabrina who died almost 3 weeks ago.

I was on the air Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday for Arthur P. It felt really good and helped me a lot to be back on the radio.
Sabrina asked me to "Always remember how much you love being on the air, and music" and said that it would help me get by….what a smart woman!

Last night I went to the Rob Zombie soundcheck. I went up on stage and recorded an interview with his guitarist John5 (pictured) that will air in the Chop Shop in a couple of weeks. It felt good to reconnect with John, but I couldn’t stick for the show, I was the host of the WRIF/Miller Lite, Red Wings V.I.P. party at the Joe. Our grand prizewinner was Erin Hanes, she got $4000 dollars and $1000 gift certificate to Hockeytown Authentics. All of our winners got free dinner and tickets to the game. Detroit won 6-5 in a shoot out bay the way.

Tonight, I’ll be back in charge of "Amped on the 80s" so give me a call.

Sunday I’ll be at the Satriani, Eric Johnson show at the State, and next Friday Joe’s old bass player Stu Hamm will be at the Magic Bag so I’ll see you around town.

All the best,
Black

Guitar fans from across the world have voted, and Eric Clapton has been elected to the Chop Shop Hall of Fame. Go to www.chopshopradio.com to get exclusive Eric Clapton desktop artwork, a bio and our Chop Shop all-star Salute.

Here are some quotes about Mr. Clapton:

"He will be timeless just because of the records he made with Cream." - Vince Gill

"He's one of the most influential white blues guitar players of all-time" - Slash
