Paul Reed Smith contest

The Chop Shop and Paul Reed Smith Guitars are giving away 6 PRS – SE guitars autographed by Paul Reed Smith, from August 28th to October 8th. We will draw one lucky winner each week from everyone that enters.

For full details and contest rules, go to www.chopshopradio.com

The photo is me outside of the Chop Shop studios with a PRS-SE that I'm taking for a test-drive myself.

PRS guitars have a very deserving reputation as the "Lamborghini of Guitars", and I'm very proud to have them as a sponsor of the Chop Shop.

Football time

It’s fantasy football time once again. This year I’m just going to play in 2 leagues. The "Mafia" league, which is a huge league that is run by some of our friends over at the Emerald Theatre and a league I started 7 years ago with friends and co-workers.

In both leagues you are allowed to franchise 1 player. I’ll be keeping Tiki Barber in one and Tomlinson in the other.

The live draft for my 12 team league is tomorrow night (Wednesday) and some of the other players in the league are familiar to WRIF listeners; including Arthur P, Mike Staff, DJ Sparky as well as Jeremy Campbell and Mark Pennington from RIFF2, our HD sister station.

The live draft in the Mafia league is this Sunday, and there are several owners flying in from out of town to play in that league.

As for the rest of my week, I’ll see you Thursday at Alice Cooper and Friday I’ll be at the Bass Pro Shops at the Great Lakes Shopping Mall from 5 to 7pm.

Labor Day weekend we’ll be set up at Arts, Beats & Eats in downtown Pontiac; I’ll be broadcasting live on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Please stop by and say hello.

Cover Songs

I had a myspace question a few days back asking me for my all-time favorite cover songs. I didn’t do any major research, but off the top of my head here is a pretty good top 12:

1) Iron Maiden – “Cross-eyed Mary (Jethro Tull did it originally)

2) April Wine – “21st Century Schizoid Man” (King Crimson)

3) Armoured Saint – “Saturday Night Special” (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

4) Ted Nugent – “Mabeline” (Chuck Berry)

5) Judas Priest – “Diamonds and Rust” (Joan Biez I think?)

6) Yngwie Malmsteen – “Lazy” (Deep Purple)

7) Gary Moore – “Shapes of Things” (Yarbirds)

8) White Lion – “Radar Love” (Golden Earring)

9) Stevie Ray Vaughan – “Little Wing” (Jimi Hendrix)

10) Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Higher Ground” (Stevie Wonder)

11) 3 Doors Down – “That Smell” (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

12) Dream Theatre – “Tears” (Rush)

I’m really enjoying the “On Demand” weekends here on the RIFF. Its great answering 50 calls an hour and finding out what everybody’s in the mood for.

I made it through my 1st birthday with out Sabrina. All the 1st times are a little tuff. I was a bit moody but I just keep in mind that she desperately wanted me to move on with my life and have FUN, so I had a great air-shift that night.

It will be strange playing fantasy football without her; she has been in my league since I started it 6 years ago. I’ll be retiring her team name, the “Isotopes” which she got from the Simpson’s.

My brother Dave is in town for the week. It has been a very long time since we’ve been able to spend any time together. Dave is my older brother so he was my biggest musical influence. Hey we all need an older brother so we can seek into their room and “borrow” AC/DC “Highway to Hell”…..how else is a little kid going to learn about rock & roll.

We are headed up to the old hometown of Flushing after my air-shift today to see old friends, hockey teammates and co-workers from 15 to 20 years ago. It should be a lot of fun.

catching up

Well Camp Jam is over and I did enjoy my 2 weeks as a teacher for all the young teenaged rockers. I was very impressed with the level of talent and dedication among the little rockers.

The Chop Shop is still growing. We are on 30 affiliates now between the 2 shows (there is a regular version and a classic rock version). That is a very strong start for a show that has only been around for 2 years.

Fantasy Football is getting closer. I’ll start cultivating my depth charts later this week. I’m in 2 leagues, the mafia league which is based out of the Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens and my own friends and co-workers league as well. The live draft is my favorite part of the entire FF season so I’m looking forward to the next few weeks.

My brother Dave (who lives in Phoenix) will be here to visit me later this week. We have not spent much time together over the last 16 years and we’re looking forward to visiting lots of old friends.

I’m also taking Dave to a Tiger’s game; you’ve got to love the Tigers, the hottest team in the land!

I’m also hoping to get enough free time to catch a couple of movies. I have not had a chance to catch “Clerks II” or “The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and I’d like to do that in the next 2 weeks.

There are some cool concerts on the horizon; Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister are at the State Fair this month and September has the Family Values Tour, Godsmack, Zombie, Shinedown, Buckethead, Tool, The Who, Roger Waters, MSG and more.

I’ll see you out there on the streets.

Black out.
