I’ve been putting in a few extra hours to get ready for the Chop Shop’s 2nd Annual All-American edition. In honor of the July 4th Holiday, I’ve decided to play music from American born guitar players including Aerosmith (Joe Perry), Kiss (Ace Frehley), Audioslave (Tom Morello), Guns ‘N Roses (Slash) and Alice In Chains (Jerry Cantrell).

My guests for the holiday weekend special include, Joe Satriani, Matt Roberts of 3 Doors Down, Pete Loefler of Chevelle, Rudolph Schenker of the Scorpions, Slash, Tom Morello and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth.

Catch the Chop Shop on Sunday mornings from 9am to 11am on the world famous, 101 WRIF.

6/27/05 Last Weekend & This Week

Last Saturday Sabrina and I went to her sister’s wedding reception in the Grand Rapids area. While I was out of town for the night Screamin’ Scott took care of "Amped On The 80s" for me, and by all reports did a great job!

I made it back in time for my Sunday air shift, but my brain must have stayed in Grand Rapids. I had one of my worst on-air screw-ups ever. Different jocks approach things from different directions, and seeing that I did not go to broadcasting school or collage my approach has always just been a natural, conversational hang out. Sunday I forgot a location of a WRIF event and I tried to read it of a piece of paper, bottom line I couldn’t find what I was looking for, and that led to a bad and pretty embarrassing break.

I’ve been asked a few times before about what makes a good radio talent, and I’ve always said, "EVERYONE makes mistakes, the good jocks blow past their mistakes and just accept them as human error, a bad jock will let it bother them and that leads to more mistakes." The rest of my Sunday shift was nearly perfect, thank God.

This week, on Wednesday night I’m down river at Harlen’s in Brownstown. Stop out and we can talk about weather or not there will be any NHL hockey this fall, and you might win some RIFF stuff too.

P.S. is Jerry Roenick the most spoiled, petty hockey player of all time or what?

6/17/05 Pistons/Tiger Tickets/Harleyfest

So my 7 game, Pistons prediction is starting to look pretty good. God are they a fun team to watch when they are clicking! Every player on the team plays an important role, but it is pretty clear to me that Ben Wallace is the key. When he brings his game, the energy level of the team is off the charts. Sunday at the Palace is gonna be huge.

Last night was the 1st of 3 Labatt bar appearances that I’m doing on Thursdays. I was at Roosevelt’s on 12 and Orchard Lake giving away Detroit Tiger tickets and passes to party on the picnic deck on July 22nd with me as the Tigers take on the Twins. Our next party is this Thursday at the Lake Pointe Yatch Club. I’ll have 5 pair of Tiger tickets to give away and a shot at tickets to the 2005 all-star game in Detroit.

Harleyfest is this weekend and the weather looks like it will be great. I will be there in spirit only this year, Friday I have a WRIF/Labatt Hockey League post party at Gus O’Connors so I won’t be able to stay for Tesla. I am set to interview Frank Hannon for a Chop Shop that should air in early July. I also can’t make Saturday, as I have a wedding to attend during the afternoon, and I’ll be rocking you radio, as usual on Saturday night.

I get the honor of siting in for Doug Podell this upcoming week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All the best, I’ll catch you on the radio.

6/15/05 A Note from Iraq

As I have mentioned before in the Blackblog, My brother in-law Tony is a U.S. Marine serving in Fallujah, Iraq. Sabrina and I don’t get to here from him very often, but he dropped us an email last week. I know ALL of us keep our service men & women in our thoughts and prayers, so I decided to share, with Tony’s permission part of his message.

"It's Tony here. I know it's been a while and I apologize. Sometimes it's hard to tell when a day starts and when it ends.
So It’s June 9, or Tessa (9) Jose-Rahn, and I got off work early cuz supposedly we may switch to three 8 hour shifts instead of two 12 hours. I've calmed down a lot. They gave me a meritorious mast (it's like a paper award for doing well) cuz They thought I am doing very good. Also cuz of how much Arabic I am learning. I didn't think I deserved it, but apparently, they did. It was me and someone from 3rd platoon who got one as well.
This deployment is going slow as hell. There's so much going on that I want to talk about but can't. I can't say anything, but there's been some interesting sh*t that has happened since we've been here. It's fu**ing amazing. But for what I'm allowed to tell you, same sh*t, different day.
I'm doing good. I hope you all are too."

Sabrina and I have been together for more than 8 years, so I have know Tony since he was 11, and it still feel’s a little strange to recognize that he is all grown up and performing a function that most us will appreciate but will never fully understand.

Baman deals with Scarecrow
10:41 AM

6/14/05 Batman Begins

Last night was the WRIF premiere of Batman Begins. This is a much darker, and more realistic version of the Batman story we all know and love. Half of the movie is the explanation of how Bruce Wayne becomes Batman and the other half is Batman kickin’ butt.

As the title implies, this is a series of movies, and it ends by setting up the next cast of characters pretty well.

If like me you’re into the Spiderman, X-Men, superhero thing you’ll love, if you’re not a hero movie person, like my wife Sabrina; you can still get some enjoyment out of the show.

WARNING. If you see this at the Star, Southfield as we did last night, take some earplugs. The volume was ridiculous. It almost made the move unmatchable.

Seduce
9:46 AM

6/11/05 Seduce

This past Thursday I got to sit down and talk to David Black from Seduce & Crud. I was hosting a WRIF party at the Emerald theatre, when I run into the Detroit legend.

When I moved from the Flint area where I grew up to the Detroit area in 1992, I had already missed the glory years of Seduce, but people used to call the radio station and ask me if I was related to David Black? The truth is David Black is my brother…..it’s just not the same David Black; my brother lives in Phoenix and doesn’t play guitar.

Anyway, Seduce is headlining this years Harleyfest and I’ll be playing a song or two from the 80s metal band tonight and next week on "Amped on the 80s" 7pm to Midnight on Saturdays. Keep us tuned in on those weekend BBQs, bonfires and boating excursions, and I’ll keep the music rockin’.

Rich and Rob deep fry the wild turkey.
11:18 AM

6/7/05 Wild Game Dinner

This past weekend Robb & Stacey Remick were hosts of their annual wild game BBQ. It was quite the spread of yummy dishes including deep fried wild turkey, venison Swedish meatballs, caribou backstraps, smoked fish and a 3 killer chili made with bear, buffalo and venison.

What really made this year’s feast special was the kindness of the people who put it all together, and then charged admission and donated the money to the Sabrina Black Fund, to help my wife & I cope with our scary medical bills.

Thank you to everyone who came and shared your time, food and money with us. Thanks to Robb & Stacey Remick, Mike & Rebecca Thornton, & Shelley & Sue Darmetko especially for taking charge and putting it all together.

Sabrina, as you all know, is a champion cancer fighter, and it is people like you who provide the fuel for her all-consuming struggle.

Thanks again….I must go eat some venison leftovers now.
